How do lasers work?
A laser is a concentrated beam of light energy. When shone directly onto the hard or soft tissue of the mouth, the wavelengths are absorbed by the tissue and instantly boil the water inside the molecules, causing microscopic explosions of the cells and vaporizing the tissue. Lasers remove tissue more accurately and efficiently than a blade or a drill. Lasers also have a cauterizing effect, which results in substantially less bleeding.
Maryland and Washington, D.C. cosmetic and laser dentistry patients enjoy the benefits of the revolutionary Waterlase® laser, the most advanced and effective dental laser available, at our state-of-the-art practice in Frederick.
Are lasers new to dentistry?
Lasers have been used in dental procedures for about 10 years. However, with the tremendous advancements made in laser dentistry over the past decade, the dental laser has become one of the most popular tools among dentists and patients who wish to minimize discomfort and maximize successful results. Our Frederick, Maryland-based laser dentist has been at the forefront of the laser dentistry revolution.
What are the advantages of laser dentistry?
At our practice in Frederick, Maryland, laser dentist Paul Gauthier, DDS make extensive use of various dental lasers to ensure the most stress-free, effective treatment possible. Most of the discomfort, swelling and bleeding associated with traditional dental procedures stems from the heat and vibration generated by the common dental drill, which is extremely taxing on the teeth and can potentially inflict further damage. Lasers use a concentrated beam of light energy that produces no heat or vibration, effectively eliminating the primary sources of discomfort. With lasers, there is considerably less swelling, bleeding, chair time, and a shorter healing period. In many cases, there is no need for anesthetic.
What procedures can be done with a laser?
At our state-of-the-art laser dentistry facility in Frederick, Maryland, renowned laser dentist Dr. Paul Gauthier uses lasers in a variety of cosmetic and general dentistry procedures including decay removal, cavity detection , wisdom tooth removal, root canal therapy, curing and hardening of dental materials, and laser teeth whitening.
